Character Name/Alias: Chang Wufei
Character age: 18 (Aged up two years)
Canon: Gundam Wing
Canon point: 2 years after Endless Waltz
History: Wiki (I do not include Frozen Teardrop. I've lifted some details from Glory of the Losers, but only where they don't contradict the original story -- an example of this is Wufei and Meilan being tutored together after they were married.)
After Endless Waltz, he joined up with Preventers and threw himself into his work. He and Sally tried to have a relationship for a while, but it never really got off the ground -- partly because he was more interested in hiding from his demons by training or working every waking moment, and partly because they didn't communicate well. While he never contacts the other pilots for anything unrelated to work, he always responds when they reach out to him, and these days he's a lot easier to track.
Sex-specific headcanons: He's a virgin and because of his very traditional upbringing, he's a bit behind when it comes to the nuances of gender and sexuality. He thinks he's asexual (without knowing the word for it) but is actually bisexual. His relationship with Sally Po never got beyond a few chaste kisses. During the war he was attracted to Treize and has a lot of shame around it. His actual sex ed consisted of 'here's the mechanics of sex, here are the names of the parts, the rest you will learn from your wife', but he's picked up some bits and pieces from cultural osmosis since joining Preventers and being around people who actually talk about that kind of thing more openly than his people did.
Appearance: He's the one on the right. He's a short Chinese man at 5'1" (and a half, but he'll never admit to how important that half is to him.) He has jet black hair with so little volume it almost looks wet. He's very lean and muscular, and while he's extremely strong, he's built more for speed and flexibility.
Personality:
Wufei is the last surviving member of a proud warrior clan, and on first blush that's exactly what he seems to be. He is proud, stubborn, and honorable, with a strong sense of justice.
He believes that he must be stronger, smarter, faster, better in every way than those around him not just to set an example for them to strive towards, but to protect them, and doing so is his sole purpose in life. Because of this, he will push himself beyond reasonable bounds, spending much if not all his free time training himself in anything he thinks might come in useful. It's the only thing he has to cling to, to keep himself from falling prey to his weaknesses; he feels tremendous guilt for his failures, and if he allows himself to dwell on it for too long, he becomes reckless, seeking death in the heat of battle rather than striving to strengthen himself. Of course it's his pride and stubbornness that keep this weakness alive and well -- refusing to seek help for the mental scars left behind by all the loss he's suffered throughout his life, or to even admit that there's a problem. One would think with his extreme aversion to showing weakness, he would try to keep his emotions under wraps, but instead he tends to express them openly. He's equally quick to anger and quick to cry, often leaning on the intensity of his emotions in the heat of battle, using it to push himself beyond his limits when necessary.
He has a great deal of contempt for women on the battlefield, but it's because he views them as physically and mentally weak, rather than emotionally so -- and if a woman is able to prove that she is his equal in battle, he will show her the same level of respect that he would give any man, even to the point of deferring to her. In general, he tends to hold women to a higher standard than men, even though he isn't prone to some of the more stereotypical views of misogynists. (For example, he doesn't necessarily think every woman should be a housewife, but he does think they should stick to jobs that won't put them in dangerous situations. He doesn't expect them to wait on him hand and foot, and if a woman were to do things for him, he would be polite and respectful in accepting it. In fact, he would defend her from any men who aren't.) This is because, rather than thinking of women as lesser, he considers himself honor-bound to defend them whether they want him to or not. His particular brand of sexism was initially a cultural belief that was then twisted and made more severe by his wife's death defending him in battle.
Wufei's sense of justice is generally tied to the larger picture, defending those who are being exploited, and striving to destroy leaders of oppressive regimes, but after the war he has been able to redirect it towards anyone who threatens the peace. After the Mariemaia incident and his part in it, that sense of justice now extends to himself; he would not hesitate to end himself if he believed he were once again bringing about war.
What did they do to end up here?:
Failure to protect his wife, resulting in her death
War crimes (attacking military cadet barracks while they were sleeping)
Misogyny
Failure to kill his enemy in a duel
Terrorism
Murder
Failure to protect his colony, resulting in its destruction with all residents killed
Killing his enemy in a duel (the same one he failed to kill above) / regicide
Failing to die in battle
Treason
Attempted extinction-level attack on a planet
Insurrection
Betrayal
Becoming "evil itself"
Attempted murder
Powers / Abilities:
He's at the high end of natural human ability in mental discipline and fighting ability. He's been trained in martial arts since he was old enough to stand, was the strongest fighter in his colony, and has a considerably higher than average stamina. He's one of the best mobile suit pilots in his world, especially in close quarters combat. He's well-versed in most scientific disciplines related to living in space (recycling of all kinds, basic repair of life sustaining systems, hydraulics, basic astrophysics, pressure systems, design and construction of mobile suits.) He is accustomed to environments of varying gravity, ranging from microgravity to full earth gravity, including transitional states.
Inventory: A sword, a handgun, a pair of reading glasses with large lenses.
